Zoo and Aquarium Association Queensland Conference to be held in Rockhampton Region

Rockhampton Regional Council and Rockhampton Zoo are proud to be hosting the 2011 Zoo and Aquarium Association Queensland Conference in November.

Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor, Councillor Brad Carter said the conference will allow people from the zoo and wildlife industry to come together in the one location to share their knowledge and keep abreast of emerging trends.

“Council expects that 60 to 80 delegates will attend the conference this year, representing approximately 25 zoos and aquaria throughout Queensland,” Cr Carter said. “I encourage all Zoo and Aquarium Association Queensland members, or people in a related industry or with a passion for protecting our wildlife from across the state to register for the 2011 conference and welcome them to experience our Region’s warm hospitality, beautiful natural environment and charming communities.

“The conference will offer fantastic networking opportunities for our staff from the Rockhampton Zoo and other Zoos and Aquaria from around the state allowing them to share their experiences and learn from others in the industry,” he said.

Council's Sport and Recreation Committee Chair, Councillor Cherie Rutherford said that delegates and guests in attendance will be inspired, motivated and challenged whilst examining this year’s theme – Lost without Zoos and Aquaria – Helping Threatened Wildlife.

"Significant directions of focus in standards for animal care and public education within zoos will be highlighted and the conference will also present an opportunity to showcase the improvements currently being undertaken at the Rockhampton Zoo," Cr Rutherford said.

“A variety of topics will be addressed and new initiatives will be discussed as to how zoos and aquaria can work together to continue to support the protection of wildlife and promote conservation issues,” she said.

The conference will be held on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 November, 2011 at the Capricorn Resort Yeppoon, with Registration and an Ice Breaker function to be held on Thursday 3 November 2011.
