Conservation in Action: September School Holiday Events

During the September school holidays, Rockhampton Zoo hosted a vibrant three-part Building Backyard Habitats series, in collaboration with the RRC Sustainability Unit, inspiring visitors to discover the wonders of local wildlife and learn how to support nature at home.

Each event featured a guest speaker sharing fascinating insights into the lives of our native species, followed by a hands-on backyard habitat activity to encourage practical conservation.

Frog Hotels

Participants learned about indigenous frog species and how to provide safe spaces for them. In this activity, each attendee built a ‘Frog Hotel’ to take home or install in community gardens. A most enjoyable and successful session! Find out how to make your own Frog Hotel here(PDF, 6MB) .

Backyard Birds

The series concluded with a celebration of Rockhampton Birdlife, where guests were encouraged to become more aware of which local birds are visiting their gardens. They also enjoyed a bird-watching experience at the lake. The attendees then created mosaic terracotta water bowls to install in their gardens.

These engaging events brought conservation to life, showing that protecting wildlife starts right in our own backyards.

Backyard Bird Conservation - 7 July 2025 -

In July, Rockhampton Zoo teamed up with Birdlife Capricornia to host an interactive workshop on backyard conservation. Targeted at older kids and adults, this session covered bird identification, how to create a bird-friendly backyard, and how you can contribute to The Backyard Bird Count. The event wrapped up with a guided bird-watching session at Yeppen Lagoon — a perfect opportunity to observe local species in their natural habitat.

Native Bee Hotel Workshops

Pollinators are essential for our ecosystems, and native bees need safe spaces to thrive! In collaboration with the Rockhampton branch of the Australian Native Bee Association, we’ve hosted multiple workshops where participants built their own native bee hotels to take home and support local pollinator populations.

Waste & Sustainability Education for Kids

Teaching the next generation about sustainability is a priority! We’ve partnered with the Rockhampton Regional Waste and Recycling (RRWR) to run interactive activities for children under five. Kids learned about recycling and waste sorting, created enrichment items from recycled materials for our meerkats, and even got an up-close look at a real garbage truck — looking inside the cab and seeing how it all works!
